Digital Inclusion Minister visits Nottingham

Digital Inclusion Minister, Huw Irranca – Davies & DC10plus Director, Stephen Dodson Yesterday (June 26th) Digital Inclusion Minister, Huw Irranca – Davies visited Nottingham to learn more about the homeshoring project that has been successfully piloted in the Broxtowe area of the city.

Nottingham, who lead on the DC10plus Flexible Working theme are working on several projects that embrace flexible working; homeshoring being one prime example of this style of working in action.Homeshoring brings the world of work right to peoples’ doorsteps – giving people the opportunity to work from home handling calls on behalf of call centre by using technology including broadband and VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) that is installed in their homes. Already popular in the USA, homeshoring is particularly suited to people whose lifestyles are more home-based – including the over 50s, women returning to work, people on incapacity benefit and those living in rural parts of the county. Peter Goodwin of Accelerate Nottingham (founding member of the DC10plus) said: “Technology offers a real opportunity to get people back into work. Performance is just as good as in office-based call centres, in some places, better. It’s not just corporate social responsibility; it has mainstream business value.”

The Minister visited the BEST Centre at Broxtowe, who have been a key partner in the project. Whilst on site he spent time with the Broxtowe community involved in the project and held discussions with project partners on current issues around ICT training and funding as well as flexible working and how ICT can be used to tackle social exclusion.
