People are still buying analogue TV sets despite digital switchover

People are still buying analogue television sets that will not work after digital switchover despite a £200 million publicity campaign funded by licence-fee payers, a powerful group of MPs warns today.

Almost half the televisions sold in the first half of last year were analogue sets, all of which will have to be upgraded if viewers want to watch their favourite programmes after switchover, according to the Public Accounts Committee.

It accuses ministers of “not taking effective action to protect consumer interests”, claiming that the digital tick label, the symbol used to identify sets that will function after switchover, was still “a mystery” to many retailers and consumers.

“Many viewers do not seem fully to understand the implications of the analogue switch-off and are still buying analogue televisions - unaware that they have built-in obsolescence,” said Edward Leigh, the committee’s chairman.
